Deep within Briarcraft, where lanterns glow and mushrooms grow wherever they please, there is a little fellow who spends most of his afternoons beside the stream. 

No one is quite sure what his name is.

He has been asked.

Several times.

He simply smiles, dips his toes into the water, and goes back to talking with the fish.

He knows all of them, of course.

There’s Mabel, who worries too much. Pip, who believes every ripple is an adventure.

And Gerald.

Gerald was late again today.

No one knows where Gerald goes, why he is always late, or precisely what he is late for.

The woodland folk insist the fish answer when spoken to.

The fairies refuse to comment.

But if you wander far enough into Briarcraft on a warm golden afternoon, you may find our little friend stretched across a mossy stone, listening very carefully to secrets carried downstream.

And should you ask what the fish told him, he'll probably just grin.

Some things, after all, are meant to stay between friends.

And Gerald really does need to work on his punctuality.
